Measuring for New Furniture Purchases

When it comes to buying furniture online, measuring your space accurately is crucial to ensure you make the right choices. Without the ability to see and feel the furniture in person, measurements can help you avoid costly mistakes and ensure a perfect fit for your home, and avoid the inconvenience of returning items.

This may sound simple but you may be surprised how this can slip your mind when considering a new piece of furniture.

Let's be real and skip the digital measuring tools and floor plans!

Understand your Vision

Let's cut the cr*p and get on with it, you know what you want and I won't be here to talk your ear off.

We (you and I) are architects and designers of our vision. Start with one room at a time. Know the colour palette you are going for, to avoid putting too many ideas into a limited space. It may be handy to see if the new furniture colours will match your current pieces, some companies offer swatches of wood, fabric and leather samples for convenience.

We offer swatches upon request, let us know which products you are interested in and we will give you our box of swatches through express shipping.

Use Painter’s Tape for Visualisation

CP 27

Stand in the room you wish to add the new furniture you like. Let's visualise the intention.

If you find it easiest to see things in person and in the space you intend to use it in. We suggest using our favourite pro tip of using painter's tape for visualisation.

Use painter’s tape to outline the dimensions on your floor. This gives you a real-world sense of the size and placement of the furniture. You can even put painter's tape on your walls to visualise the height of the product.

You can physically see and walk around the taped off area of where you want to place the new furniture and see if the size suits its intention.

Consider Traffic Flow and Layout

  • Ensure there is enough space for people to walk around comfortably. Leave enough space of clearance around each piece of furniture.
  • Room Layout: Arrange furniture in a way that facilitates conversation and functionality. For example, place seating areas near focal points like a TV or fireplace.

Account for Clearance and Accessibility

Ensure there is enough clearance around your furniture for ease of use and maintenance. For example, leave enough space to open drawers, recline chairs, and access storage compartments.

Double-Check Product Dimensions

When you find a piece of furniture you like online, double-check the product dimensions provided by the retailer. Compare these measurements with your floor plan to ensure a good fit.

  • Width, Depth, and Height: Make sure to note all three dimensions of the furniture.
  • Additional Features: Consider any additional features like extendable parts or reclining functions that may require extra space.

Let's sum it up

Understand what the intention of the new furniture is, understand which room it is going in and tape the floor to visualise the size of the product. It is always safe to ask, some companies offer swatches and it may be nice for some to see the colours in person, which can change the look and size of the product in a space.

Double-check the dimensions of the product and take the time to plan the area can save you from the hassle of returns and make your online furniture shopping experience enjoyable and rewarding.

Happy shopping!
